Conventional IBR vaccines protect cattle from IBR infection. When cattle are vaccinated with these, the herd obtains a positive IBR status as vaccinated and infected animals cannot be distinguished.
Current commercially available IBR marker vaccines are based on the deletion of the viral structural protein, gE. Vaccination of cattle with these marker vaccines will not induce antibodies against gE while infection with the field virus strains will induce a positive antibody response against gE.
